VALIDATING A NEW MACHINE
ASTRO works with you to establish a smart-framework for AM quality and process control. Through the co-authoring of detailed specifications and Standard Operating Procedures, the program integrates AS9100 with the necessary conformance industry standards such as NADCAP F42, NASA 6030, and ASTM AMQ.

QUALIFYING A NEW MATERIAL
At ASTRO, we qualify alloys using a multidisciplinary approach that integrates materials science, engineering principles, and mathematical analysis. Our process starts with understanding the fundamental interactions at the atomic level—how alloying elements interact to influence properties such as strength, ductility, and thermal stability. Our basic evaluations include metallurgical analysis of alloys for grain structure, density, and surface roughness.
We conduct extensive testing on a statistically significant number of specimens, evaluating mechanical properties like tensile strength, yield strength, and elongation. These evaluations account for variations due to manufacturing processes, thermal treatment, and stress relief. If a specimen fails to meet the required basis values, for your application, we provide guidance in adjusting processing methods. Our quick-turn, iterative process ensures that materials are optimized to meet your S-Basis, A-Basis and B-Basis demands.

Whether it’s a large-scale production effort with multi-laser configurations across serialized machines or a small, high-complexity batch, our approach shares adaptive evaluation of witness specimens. This includes mechanical testing for laser zone and orientation, elevated and cryo chambers specific to application, and metallurgical and chemical analysis.
